What do those Windows Installer Error codes Mean?

If you've ever had your SolidWorks install fail with a cryptic Windows error code you know it can be frustrating.  Your first call is to us at Support and we are happy to assist.  If you are a do it yourselfer you might want to know what those codes mean.  SolidWorks support has created a number of knowledge base articles pertaining to particularly codes and they can be quite helpful.  Now its a matter of matching the code and the knowledge base article.

Check out this FAQ article on the SolidWorks website.  In addition to links to install guides and answers to commonly asked install questions, there is a list of the Windows Installer error codes and the corresponding knowledge base article to figure out what went wrong.  You'll need a Customer Portal login to access the knowledge base.

Another trick I've started using is in regards to Installation Logs.  When you install SolidWorks everything that happens is recorded in a log.  These are a great tool for analyzing why something didn't work properly.  The logs are stored in text file that can be a pain to scroll through in Notepad or some other text editor.  Instead drop the file into Microsoft Excel.  The file is formatted such that Excel can sort the data into columns.  Which would you rather read?

Thanks John for the link.

It's actually easier to just read within a text editor (I prefer Notepad++) and looking for "return value 3". The error is usually right above this. You can then just google for an answer or check the SW KB.
